• An integral part of environmental study, which deals with the total environment, is socio-economic environment incorporating various facts related to socio-economic condition in the area.
• These includes demographic structure of the area, provision of basic amenities viz., housing, education, health and medical services, occupation, water supply, sanitation, communication transportation, prevailing diseases  pattern as well as feature of aesthetic significance such as temples, historical monuments etc. at the baseline level.
• This helps in visualizing and predicting the likely impact depending upon the nature and magnitude of the project. Socio-economic study of an area gives an opportunity to assess the socio-economic conditions of an area.
